St George was probably born of a Cappadocian father and a Palestinian mother of noble rank.He became a brave Roman .
The stories say that George was a Knight of Cappadocia (now Eastern Turkey)
around AD 300. One day he visited a town where the people were
terrified of a that ate human beings. The had been
chosen as the dragon’s next meal, but killed the dragon and
saved her from a horrible end. He refused to take any award, but asked
the to all become Christians.
He protested against Rome's persecution of Christians and was tortured
and beheaded for his Christian faith on 23 April, 303, in Lydda (in modern day Palestine).
Today St. George is the patron saint not only of but also of Catalonia, Greece ,
Palestine or Russia. His emblem, a red on a white background, is the flag of England,
and part of the flag the Union .
